NZ Sexual Health Society

These best Practice Guides have been produced as a collaborative project by Counties Manukau District Health Board and Auckland Sexual Health Service, and has been adapted for use by NZSHS as National Guidelines  for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections.

In 2005 a working party was convened derived from primary care (GPs, nurses & managers), sexual health (sexual health physician), pharmacy, family planning and school based health services (a GP visiting schools and a school based nurse). This group reviewed a local guide produced by Auckland Sexual Health Services, the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV Guidelines, and the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) 2002 STD Treatment Guidelines. The BASHH and CDC guidelines are evidence based and internationally accepted.

Although this is the first guide to be produced in New Zealand covering diagnosis and treatment of the commonly seen sexually transmitted infections, it is important to note that in-depth guidelines on the management of genital herpes and genital warts are available. These have been produced by the Professional Advisory Boards of the Viral Sexually Transmitted Infection Education Foundation and the Australia and New Zealand HPV Project, and provide extensive information regarding the management of these conditions. These guidelines can be accessed in printed form or online at www.herpes.org.nz
These have been reviewed 2006.
